Today

Today, I was walking in my Mother-in-Law’s Dallas neighborhood, when I saw an interesting site. As I rounded the block multiple times I could not help but notice an old man (70+) mowing grass. At first, I thought he was cutting his own lawn, but after my second pass by I realized he was a hired lawn care worker. Over the next 45 minutes, I passed by him multiple times, each time noticing his attention to detail in caring for his customers lawn.

And then it hit me.

This was one of the rare moments left in our modern day American culture. This was someone who cared about his job. Sure, he was working to pay bills or take care of his family, but his attention to detail spoke louder than the invoice he left with his customer. Every trimmed bush, every raked leaf, every edged blade of grass screamed, “Its not just about money, its about doing the job right.”

Don’t get me wrong, it is easy to overlook details or become consumed with life’s day to day tasks. But in a culture that thrives on Government bailouts, Presidents who can bring “hope”, and citizens who don’t ask what they can do for their country, but what their country can do for them, today was a breath of fresh air. Although all I did was nod and wave to this gentleman, he communicated something to me. Do the job with excellence. Today was a day I will always remember.
